Memorial Day, May 27, 2013: Remembrance

The American Legion Shirley Hill Post 94 hosted the annual Memorial Day service to recall and remember all veterans, to include those currently serving on active duty and reserve status. Various speakers reminded us of the reason that we should not lose sight for Memorial Day remembrance and celebration of our veterans and the making of a great nation. As LTC Mike Kuehn, USA Retired quoted from the Grand Commanders message “memories of Memorial Day call us back to the principles and ideals that made this nation great.” We as a nation champion human freedom and so many have sacrificed all for this great nation to remain free. The guest speaker, CMSGT Lou Cook, UASF Retired continued with this message. Those that gave above and beyond the call of duty are our hero’s and we must remember the older generation of men & women who gave America her freedom.  We as a nation must never forget the ultimate sacrifice by so many.

To all of the speakers and the community of Snow Hill we thank you for making this a memorable Memorial Day.

The Veterans Day ceremony was hosted by the National Guard Armory, Snow Hill, N.C. with direct support from city and county officials, American Legions Post 94, Post 332, Post 536 and VFW Post 9841. The ceremony was kicked off by Commander Lou Cook of Post 94 with the induction of Mayor Dennis K. Liles, of Snow Hill. Mayor Liles welcome was followed by a brief invocation and remarks from Sgt. Zachary Liles of the US Army Rangers, about cost of freedom and his experience in Afghanistan.

The keynote address this Veterans Day was provided by LTC Ralph Smiley, USAF (Ret). LTC Smiley’s presentation covered a period from signing of the Armistice on November 11, 1918, ending World War 1, up to the war in Afghanistan. LTC Smiley’s presentation started by asking the question, “who remembers what Armistice Day is and when did it change to be called Veterans Day?” Armistice Day was observed on November 11 for the signing of the peace treaty ending World War 1 and in 1954 the US Congress approved November 11 as Veterans Day in honor of all US Military veterans. LTC Smiley recounted some of his experiences in his 20 plus years of flying the B-47 and B-52 aircraft, during the cold war and in the skies over Vietnam, with specific accounts from operation Linebacker One & Two and Arc Light. In closing, LTC Smiley concluded with a heartfelt thank you to all veterans who have served and all those that are currently on active or reserve duty.

The Veterans Day ceremony was attended by veterans from World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, Iraqi and Afghanistan Wars, their spouse’s, and their children and grandchildren.
